FIELD TRIP

The REMARKABLE Beauty of Precision Motors

Doug McLeod invited us to take a look around his shop, Precision Motors. Built as a Texaco Station in 1941, the site sits prominently on Silver Lake Boulevard between two masts of the neighborhood’s gentrification: critically-acclaimed Alimento restaurant and screenwriter’s haven, LAMILL.

The shop is a window to another time in Los Angeles, and Doug and his team play a part in keeping that era alive by breathing new life into cars and trucks likely to have been on the road for more than half-a-century.

Customers we met said they trusted the Precision Motors team like family and have come back again and again over the years, though the future of the shop is uncertain: the land seems increasingly likely to be developed as housing, despite attempts to landmark the building for its architectural significance. Doug has entertained re-opening at another location, should he ultimately be forced to shutter, but no plans have been announced.

The collection of cars settled on the lot, as well as fresh models circulating through, are worth a visit— or a look below.
